Treblinka Concentration Camp
It was July 23rd 1942. It was minus six degrees. We were at the concentration camp in Treblinka. The camp’s perimeter was surrounded by electric fences that measured up to six metres high. And if any of us were to try to escape, we would get a painful zap that would sting for a while. My name is George Caleb. I am twenty years old. My brother’s name is Joseph Caleb. He is nineteen years old. He and I are brothers.
We used to live in Munich, Germany with our mother Adina, our father Michael and our twin sisters Delilah and Davina. Our sisters are both fifteen years old and they both have long blond hair, blue eyes and snow-white skin. Adina is thirty-one years old and she has brown hair, green eyes and fair skin.
Michael is twenty-four years old. He has short black hair, light blue eyes and fair skin. My brother has the same colour of eyes as our father and the same skin colour as our mother. His hair is kind of like our fathers only instead of black, it is strawberry-blonde. I look exactly like our father (light blue eyes, fair skin and short black hair).
Life was great until the Nazi’s invaded. We didn’t hear them come in. Mother was helping Delilah and Davina with their homework in the dining room. Father was playing cards with Joseph and me.
Then we heard a knock on the door, and when father opened the door…..there hunched over and out of breath was our next-door neighbour Mrs.Golda. “You and your family have to get out of here” said Mrs.Golda breathlessly. “Why?” questioned my father. “The Nazi’s are looking for Jews and if they find you here, they are going to take you and throw you out of your house!!!” yelled Mrs.Golda. “Alright then, I guess we got to go.” my father replied sadly. We all went to bed that night. When we woke up, Joseph and I were alone. I looked up at the sign above us and realized we were at Treblinka concentration camp.
Joseph and I were sitting in our cell. We were minding our own business, reminiscing about how great our lives were before the Nazis came and invaded our homes. “I remember coming home after working at the animal shelter. I walked through the streets of Munich and we were free to do whatever we pleased.” I said happily to Joseph. “Yes, I miss not having to worry about being a Jew and people arresting, beating or making fun of you” replied Joseph with an unhappy sigh. We kept talking back and forth.
When one of the guards knocked on the cell door and before either of us could get up to go open the door the guard opened it and entered the room. He walked toward me. He said his name was Alfie, Alfie Hertz. Alfie was very mean. He had dark brown eyes and a pointy nose. He also had a slight temper. “Christ-killers!” he yelled. “You are a psycho” said Joseph.
Alfie reached into his pocket, pulled out his knife and was ready to stab Joseph when Karl grabbed Alfie’s arm. “Who would have thought” said Karl. And he dragged Alfie out the door. Alfie came back to the cell a bit later and walked over to where Joseph was sleeping. Joseph felt like someone was watching him and woke up. Alfie noticed that he was awake and hit him multiple times. Joseph continuously pleaded for Alfie to stop.
When I realized I could not sleep with all of the noise, I woke up and my eyes right away noticed Joseph’s injuries. I whispered “who did that to you?” and Joseph just pointed in front of him and that was when I finally saw Alfie. I got up off of my bed, walked over to Alfie and spat in his face. I knew right away that guaranteed that I was going to die.
Alfie grabbed me and Joseph and dragged us out of the cell and over to the middle of the yard and had us stand on chairs. He looked at all of the other prisoners and guards that were in the yard.
“This is what happens when you disrespect us” said Alfie.
Then nooses were thrown onto our necks. Alfie then had called two guards over and they kicked the chairs out from under us and once the chairs were moved out of the way our feet were no longer touching solid ground. With the nooses around our necks, breathing became really hard to do. We tried to get the nooses off of our necks with no change at all whatsoever. Finally we just gave up and let death take us away from the world.
